| A track rated as a Heavy 8 ( slightly inferior to a Slow) following heavy and consistent rain greeted runners on Thursday. The racing was closely contested, with four photo finishes called for to decide the outcomes. Shinto broke through at his eighth run giving comeback jockey James Nevin another win following a heady ride in the 2YO Maiden Plate. We Say won at start 14, following 7 previous placings and gave jockey Brendon McCoull the first leg of a winning double. His second win was aboard the promising 3YO Ishtar King who made it 2 from 2 in his adopted State, winning the Class 1 1400m. Race 3 was taken out by rank outsider Best Gee Gee in a close finish from consistent mare Hot Sybil, giving trainer Walter McShane and his stable jockey Shuji Amano a surprise win at the juicy odds of $63.00. James Nevin continued on his winning way with a win on promising filly Lombadina who got up in a three way photo over first starter Spring Desert and the heavily backed ex Victorian North Lad, who looked home 50m out. Monalusive won at start 23, beating a field of Maiden/Class 1 horses, and giving her trainer John Blacker and jockey Lee Smith the first leg of a winning double. John's second winner was promising galloper King Of Gondor, who was dropping back from 1600m to an unsuitable 1200m, but finished strongly to beat a smart Class 4 field. Underrated 6YO Old Hands won his fifth race at the track and his second over the trip, when he won the Heart Foundation Hcp over 1400M beating a good Winter Handicap field. The win continued the good season at the track for both Charlie Goggin and David Pires. The final race on the nine event program went the way of Happent, having his first try at the trip and proving too good for the opposition over 2100M. The next meeting is on July 15 (Thursday). |
